The Indian High Commission and the Government of India celebrated the United National International Day of Yoga this past Sunday with more than 500 participants performing yogic postures at Cheras Indoor Stadium.

The event was made a part of the Festival of India in Malaysia, which runs from March to June and has featured events such as folk dances, exhibitions, film festivals and workshops on Indian lifestyle.

As the hundreds of flexible attendees soothed body and mind with a series of stress-relieving poses, the Manasa Yoga Institute performed a special Yoga Dance on the stage combining Indian choreography with popular yoga positions.

The yogic fun was not restricted to Cheras, however, as all over the city, Yoga Organisations held special demonstrations and performances to commemorate the day.

The art of yoga originated in India thousands of years ago and is now continuing to grow more and more popular all the world.

The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi encouraged the implementation of an International Yoga Day in the UN calendar as he believes it would inspire a change in our general lifestyles.

He said in the United Nations: “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfilment, harmony between man and nature, and a holistic approach to health and well-being.”
