Counting down to flag off! 139 days to the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2015! (L-R) Datuk Law Hong Soon, Deputy police chief of KL; Datuk Seri Hj. Ahmad Phesal, Mayor of KL; Mahendra Gursahani, MD and CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia; Rainer Biemans, Director of Dirigo Events Sdn. Bhd, Owner and Organiser of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon. and Datuk Karim Ibrahim, President of Malaysia Athletics Federation

Running a marathon, or 42.195km, takes a level of commitment and perhaps even craziness that few are willing to dedicate themselves to. And yet, each year hundreds of thousands take part in these punishing events, pushing their physical and mental capacities to the edge.

Some 35,000 runners are expected to enter this year’s Standard Chartered KL Marathon (SCKLM), one of the country’s largest international sporting events that draws participants who crave the pleasure-pain of distance running from around the world.

Back for a seventh year, the SCKLM was recently launched at the Standard Chartered KL Park, thus officially opening registration for the event. The first two days saw more than 20,000 runners registering, attesting to the popularity of this ever growing event. No surprise then that it recently won the Platinum Award for Events Category at the 2015 KL Mayor’s Tourism Awards for helping to position KL as an ideal destination for sports tourism.

“The SCKLM is an annual event that appeals to everyone. What we hope to achieve is a great and memorable experience not just for runners but for spectators, supporters and volunteers alike. We are also looking forward to welcoming international runners and supporters and we hope that they will bring with them good memories when they return home,” said Rainer Biemans, Director of Dirigo Event Sdn Bhd at the launch.

A total of eight categories are open to the public consisting of the Full Marathon (42.195km), Honda Half Marathon (21km), MSIG 10km – Speed, Cruise and Leisure, 5km Fun Run, 3km and 1km Kid’s Dash, 10km Ministries Challenge (Team Challenge), 10km Universities Challenge (Team Challenge), and 10km Corporate Challenge (Team Challenge).

The event will flag off at Dataran Merdeka and maintain the same routes as the previous year with runners cutting through the heart of KL on more elevated roads. These raised sections, including the Ampang Elevated Highway, offers runners the experience of a bird’s eye view of the city skyline while keeping traffic at more manageable levels.

Along the route, runners will race by iconic sites, a blend of old-world charm and modern marvels including the Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers, KTMB Station Kuala Lumpur, the National Monument and the former Kuala Lumpur High Court in the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.

Since its inception the SCKLM has been active in terms of charity and this year is no different. The 2015 theme is ‘Run for a Cause’ and the beneficiaries are the Standard Chartered Foundation, National Cancer Society, Hospis Malaysia and Pertubuhan Alam Sekitar EcoKnights Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor.

If you want to run for a cause this year, don’t wait to register as places are extremely limited. Head to kl-marathon.com to secure your spot and for more information check out facebook.com/SCKLmarathon, twitter.com/SCKLmarathon and instagram.com/SCKLmarathon.
